A Healthy Diet For CRPS Patients

Many CRPS sufferers find that maintaining a healthy diet goes a long way in reducing their pain. Continue reading to find out more.

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) leaves sufferers in continuous pain, and is an incurable illness. While there is no cure for CRPS, there a number of techniques recommended to sufferers to manage and reduce pain. As CRPS lawyers, we engage with sufferers of CRPS on an almost daily basis, and understand the importance of various techniques, from alternative therapies such as yoga and breathing techniques, to psychology including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and General Counselling, right down to the effects of diet on pain symptoms.

While we all enjoy treats from time to time, it is important for CRPS sufferers to stick to anti-inflammatory food groups as much as possible. Key to this diet plan are the four Fs:

  • Fresh Fruit
  • Fresh Vegetables
  • Fish
  • Fowl

The four Fs are all classed as anti-inflammatories, yet it is important to bear in mind that cooking methods should be considered. Fish and fowl should be roasted, baked or grilled, while canned fruit and vegetables should be avoided. Aside from the four Fs, other foods that are recommended include low-fat dairy products; unsalted, raw nuts; lean meats; and whole grains.

Food groups that should be avoided include anything with a high sugar or fat content, as well as processed foods. In addition, arachidonic and oxalic acids should also be avoided, which means limiting the intake of coffee, chocolate, red meat, butter and eggs. CRPS sufferers tend to already have a heightened inflammatory response, so eating such food groups can increase inflammation and worsen already inflamed and painful areas.

Sticking to an anti-inflammatory diet helps the inhibitory nerve cells that suppress pain. It also helps provide the building blocks to prevent any further nerve damage, while increasing circulation and energy, decreasing pain perception, and strengthening the immune system.

Although we would advise sticking to an anti-inflammatory diet, all cases of CRPS are unique, and we would always advise consulting your GP on lifestyle and treatment changes.
